Seeding Your Lawn This Fall
If you didn't know, Fall is the best time of year to plants grass seed on your lawn. The soil is warm while the air is cold, and this mixture creates the perfect environment for grass to grow. The roots will settle before the cold winter arrives. Having these roots grow before winter allows you to fertilize them in the Fall to create healthier grass when Spring comes around! Here are some tips to help you grow the best grass in the next couple of months:
Summer can take a toll on your yard, so there is a chance of having some grassless spots around your property. Once the lounging in the yard or having friends over to swim in your pool is done for the season, it's the perfect time to plant grass! When you know foot traffic will be low in your yard, take the time to start on your grass growing adventure. After the seed is planted, make sure you either rope off the specific area or be sure to tell your family which spots not to walk through. If you are seeding anywhere near sidewalks, it's important to be more vigilant with neighbors and other pedestrians walking around that area.
Make Sure Your Soil is Ready
When laying down grass seed, it's important to clear the area of all rocks, sticks, leaves, and other yard debris. This way, the seed will have a flat, clean surface to grow on. Try to scratch the surface of the soil about 1-2 inches. After adding seeding soil, use a rake to smooth it down. You grass will grow better when it has a proper base to plant the seeds.
Overseed if You Have Thin Grass
Everyone wants thick, plush green grass! Fall is the best time to thicken thinning grass, not just for planting seed where there is no grass at all. When you overseed your lawn, you have to make sure to water it constantly. Keep the soil surface moist until the grass has grown around three inches, and you can mow it.
