Outdoor Design Trends of 2021
As spring continues to creep up on us, it's important to keep track of the trends when it comes to outdoor and landscaping design. After this past year, it’s no surprise that people are investing more into their home spaces this year, attempting to recreate the niceties that exist among travel. Without further ado, here are some of the top outdoor design trends to watch out for this season.
While the traditional garden will never truly come to pass, what’s becoming more common is a less pampered and more wild and organic feeling garden. While we always want to stay away from anything that looks overgrown or poorly maintained, for some, more dense gardens provide a feeling of protection from the outside world.
Additionally, more functional gardens that feature usable vegetables, herbs and seasonings are becoming more popular as a way to integrate the kitchen and the outdoors and avoid unnecessary shopping.
Quality and comfortable furniture has replaced anything that once passed for cheap or plastic. As people invest in their outdoor spaces, comfort has become a number one priority, especially as the warmer months approach and working from home outside becomes an option.
Covered Outdoor Living Areas
This winter we saw a lot of design that aimed to bring the outside inside. Now that the warmer months are here, we’re seeing the reverse; an attempt to bring the comforts of indoors to the outdoors. This continues with covered outdoor living areas, ranging from cabana style furniture to more overarching structures.
Subtle Lighting Techniques
Lighting is key when it comes to creating a specific vibe. Our visual experience is almost always dictated by the available lighting, and when it comes to nighttime in the outdoors, people are opting for more subtle lighting. Smaller lights scattered here and there help it diffuse over a larger area and avoid that “spotlight” effect you get with some outdoor lighting.
Splashes of Color
While the past 10 years were definitely dominated by minimalist design, bolder colors are becoming part of our language again, and we are starting to see some vibrant colors in big splashes. This is all about creating expression and being more playful with outdoor areas and what they entail.
